1918 - Russian Czar Nicholas II, his wife and their five children were executed by firing squad in the Ural Mountains of Siberia.
1992 - The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, refused a pregnant social worker access to the unlicensed French abortion pill RU-486.

 Earthquake in Japan Causes Nuclear Reactor BreachA strong earthquake struck Japan on Monday, collapsing homes and damaging the world's most powerful nuclear power plant. At least 8 people have been reported dead and over 900 injured; some 10,000 people have fled to evacuation centers. The quake also triggered a small fire and a radioactive water leak at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear reactor.
